Alternative Hair Day 2006 - Hair raising - Fundraising!
|
Alternative Hair Day 2006, raising funds and awareness for Leukaemia Research, was a huge success!
The day more than doubled the numbers of participating salons from the previous event, and a massive trade PR and leaflet campaign certainly helped to raise awareness of this fantastic initiative, originally created by Alternative Hair Club President, Joshua Galvin.
Salons throughout the UK were offered the opportunity to participate by simply selling specially created “scissor character” pin badges and phone charms, right through to full days of dedicated FUNdraising with special events and in-salon promotions.

Sanrizz in St. Albans – together with every other Sanrizz salon - opened on Sunday and offered half-price haircuts. They all wore fancy dress, had lots of fun and raised loads of cash!
|
Although the charity and the need to raise funds are taken seriously, the emphasis on the day is to encourage salons and stylists to have fun! Crazy sponsored head shaving, fancy dress and other light-hearted events were the order of the day.
Douglas Osborne, Chief Executive of The Leukaemia Research Fund, was thrilled with the effort.
“We are always delighted to receive support and donations from any source, but the hairdressing world has been particularly supportive over the years – especially through the Alternative Hair Show. Now, with Alternative Hair Day, every salon and stylist in the UK has the opportunity to do their bit. Naturally, I’d like to thank every salon, stylist and client who has helped to support us.”
Many salons are now continuing to raise funds through selling pins and charms, and busily collecting sponsorship monies raised. However, the organisers are keen to encourage salons to send in their donations as quickly as possible.
Joshua Galvin says; “I’d like to personally thank everyone who has helped to raise money, but do remember to send it in to us as soon as you can. Please also remember to identify the money as coming from ‘Alternative Hair Day’ if you can. Once you’ve done that, you can start planning your next event!”
EVERY DAY CAN BE AN ‘ALTERNATIVE HAIR DAY’
Each year the Alternative Hair Show raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Leukaemia Research and ultimately we want ‘Alternative Hair Day’ to match that sum – even exceed it perhaps!
The fundraising team are keen to emphasise that although these specific events are a fantastic way to focus FUNdraising for Leukaemia Research, you can hold an ‘Alternative’ event or promotion ANYTIME.
-
Got a special birthday or anniversary coming up in your salon? Be ‘Alternative’!
-
Looking for an event to raise your PR profile with the local press? Be ‘Alternative’!
-
Want to hold your own local show or presentation? Be ‘Alternative’!
We’ll do everything we can to help by providing support materials, advice and encouragement, but don’t forget to include some clever ways to raise some cash for Leukaemia Research!
Douglas Osborne, Chief Executive of The Leukaemia Research Fund, is confident you can do it.
“We’re delighted and proud that Leukaemia Research has become virtually an adopted charity for the hairdressing industry. Each year, for example, your work brings immediate support and encouragement to families with children affected by leukaemia through the brilliant Alternative children’s party trip. With your help and encouragement we can do so much more. So, if you are thinking of creating a charity event or activity within your salon – please remember to be ‘Alternative’!”
